Aldi selected MTech to provide a new two way radio system for one of its regional distribution centres, helping teams communicate more effectively across a busy and fast moving logistics environment.

As Aldi’s UK grocery market share continued to grow and new stores opened across the country, increasing pressure was placed on the retailer’s logistics and distribution network. Regional hubs such as the Chelmsford distribution centre in Essex play a vital role, supplying Aldi stores throughout the South East.

Managing stock, vehicle movements, deliveries and warehouse operations across a large distribution centre requires close coordination between teams. Fresh produce adds further pressure, with orders needing to be received, processed and dispatched quickly so products reach stores in the right condition and on time.

Reliable communication across the site was therefore essential to keeping operations moving efficiently.

The Challenge

Aldi’s Chelmsford distribution centre operates around the clock, with employees working across a large site and different operational areas.

Managers identified that too much time was being spent physically moving around the depot to speak with individual teams. In a fast paced logistics environment, this created unnecessary delays and made coordinating day to day activity more difficult.

Aldi needed a communication system that would allow supervisors and operational teams to contact each other immediately wherever they were working.

Our Recommendation

Following a full assessment of the site, MTech recommended a fleet of Lugra Evolve handsets supported by a Motorola DR3000 repeater and antenna system.

The Lugra E55 is a hybrid analogue and digital two way radio, providing Aldi with flexibility while allowing the system to develop over time. It can operate alongside existing analogue radios while providing access to additional digital functionality when required.

Features include secure call encryption and the ability to communicate with larger groups or individual users. This gives managers greater control over communications while allowing teams to keep conversations relevant to the task at hand.

Reliable Coverage Across the Depot

Providing dependable radio coverage throughout the distribution centre was a key requirement.

A Motorola DR3000 repeater was installed to strengthen the radio signal across the site, supported by an antenna system designed to provide consistent coverage throughout the facility.

This allows managers to contact employees quickly wherever they are working, reducing the need to walk across the depot simply to pass on information or coordinate activity.

The Results

The new radio system has improved everyday communication across Aldi’s Chelmsford distribution centre.

Managers can now contact teams immediately across the site, helping reduce wasted time and improve coordination between different operational areas. Reliable coverage and secure calling also give employees a dependable way to communicate throughout the working day.

With a flexible radio system in place, the distribution centre is better equipped to manage the demands of a busy logistics operation and support Aldi’s continued growth across the South East.
