MTech Group has supported the Ryder Cup as its Public Address Partner for more than four decades, providing the communication and audio systems required for one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
That partnership continued for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. MTech Group delivered public address systems across the venue, supported live television interviews and provided the audio infrastructure required for broadcasts reaching audiences around the world.
Radio communications were also supplied across the event site and wider Rome area. This combined traditional digital two way radios with IDARO Smart Radios operating over 4G and WiFi, allowing selected teams to communicate over much greater distances without the usual limitations of a traditional radio network.
Planning and preparation took place over eight months, with our engineers beginning the installation of radio communication and public address equipment months ahead of the event. Before, during and after the Ryder Cup, the MTech team worked extensive hours onsite in Rome to keep both systems operating reliably throughout the event.
Public Address Systems
MTech Group supplied the audio systems used for interviews and television broadcasters covering the Ryder Cup. Broadcasts reached 201 countries worldwide with a potential audience of 623 million households.
Public address systems were also installed within partner suites, giving guests access to background music and allowing interviews to take place between matches.
Across the wider venue, networked public address systems distributed music and emergency announcements to key areas of the site. Coverage included multiple DJ stages, public catering areas, hospitality spaces, the main shop and the central village, creating a connected audio system across the event.
Traditional Radio Communications
A total of 1,400 digital two way radios were hired for use throughout the Ryder Cup. The fleet included Hytera HP685, HP505 and PD665 DMR radios, providing secure encrypted communications for teams working across the venue.
Radios supported both the European and USA teams as well as marshals, volunteers, Team Captains and Vice Captains, giving users a quick and dependable way to communicate throughout the event.
Radio Communications Over 4G
For teams requiring communication beyond the coverage of the traditional radio network, 50 IDARO Smart Radios were provided using 4G and WiFi connectivity.
The Emergency Team, Control Room and Transportation Teams could use familiar push to talk communication while remaining connected across much greater distances.
The IDARO system included Hytera PNC380 Smart Radios and was particularly valuable for coordinating transportation throughout the Ryder Cup. GPS tracking allowed Control Room teams to see the location of people and vehicles, supporting quicker and more effective coordination.
Using 4G and WiFi also extended communications beyond the main event site. Teams could remain in contact with buses and hotels across Rome, providing coverage over distances that would not have been practical using traditional radio communications alone.
